Becoming Texan, administratively: the short list with real deadlines.

Four systems, each with its own clock. Here's the order that avoids the classic circular-dependency trap.

The sequence that works

1. Vehicle first, license second — new residents must register vehicles within 30 days and get a Texas driver license within 90; because registration paperwork feeds the license visit, doing the vehicle first untangles the classic loop. Vehicle registration runs through your county tax office after the state's inspection/emissions requirements for your county are met; bring proof of insurance meeting Texas minimums. 2. Driver license at a DPS office — appointment systems exist and corridor-area offices reward booking ahead; bring the identity, residency, and vehicle documents the DPS checklist specifies (print it; they mean it). 3. Voter registration — the license visit offers it, or register by mail/county site; note Texas's registration deadline runs weeks ahead of any election you'd want to vote in. 4. Homestead exemption if you bought — its own guide; file with your county appraisal district, free, after closing.

The corridor wrinkle

Two counties serve this corridor — Tarrant and Denton, depending on your address — so "your county tax office" and "your appraisal district" are address-specific facts, not corridor-wide ones. Your closing documents or lease name the county; start there. Requirements and deadlines are set by state agencies and change — the DPS and DMV published checklists are the record.
